Adventures come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s always important to plan any short walks or hikes that are suitable to abilities, especially when it comes to kids. Walks can be leisurely or challenging, but most of all they should be fun for the whole family. Growing kids benefit so much from being in nature, from seeing plants and animals, to developing their gross motor skills, fostering a sense of adventure and sparking their imaginations and curiosity.

Family Bushwalk Essentials: 6 Tips for Safe and Enjoyable Adventures

1. Planning your Family Friendly Walk

Do your research on where to go, use the Adventure Together Map for ideas or check your State Park Authority website (here is a list of them). Make sure you choose a trail that is suitable for everyone's abilities and plan breaks on your walk to enjoy your surroundings. Checking weather conditions is essential before heading out, a super hot day or afternoon storm could make conditions extremely challenging. Importantly, let other people know where you are going in case you get lost. Finally, check for any park alerts, especially over bushfire season and make sure you stay on the trails.
2. Comfort is Key, Dress for the Conditions

Making sure you've got the right gear for a comfortable adventure. If kids are uncomfortable your day together could be cut short. Weather conditions can change quickly so waterproof and windproof clothing is essential, comfortable shoes or boots, and layers if it's extra cold out. On a hot days make sure you're protected from the sun. And if you're going through thick bush on narrow trails, long clothing is recommended to avoid potential stings and bites.
3. Pack Smart, Trek Smart: Essentials for a Well-Equipped Family Bushwalk

When venturing out, make sure you bring the essentials to keep everyone fuelled and hydrated for a fun day out. Bring at least 2 litres of water per person and plenty of food and nutritious snacks. And treats are of course great for keeping kids motivated! A first aid kit is essential as sometimes kids can fall and get scratches, but also consider getting a snake bite kit too. Make sure there is enough battery in your phone to last the day, bring a spare battery pack. For long hikes and bigger adventures, you should have a map and compass and a personal locator beacon (PLB). It goes without saying, but have a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent too! A short a simple walk needn't be complicated though, just make sure you are prepared.
4. Leave No Trace, Embrace Nature

Embrace the ethos of responsible bushwalking by leaving no trace. Bring a rubbish bag and minimise waste by taking it away with you. Support responsible bushwalking for nature conservation and enjoyment of future generations.
5. Put Safety First, Respect the Outdoors

Safety is key to enjoying a day out in nature, whether at the beach or the bush. Wherever you go, please following park authority rules and alerts. This guide covers some of the key aspects of safety, but always be alert on bush walks and have kids within reach, while staying on designated paths. Importantly, be alert to your surroundings; listen for any falling tree branches and look up at the tree canopy to if there are any dangling branches over trails - especially when it's windy. Avoid trails on windy days as branches can fall. Stay clear of any rock ledges and drops. Look out for any wildlife, like snakes, and be sure not to bother them.
